Mindfulness & Yoga

Yoga is simply body postures and breathing, focusing, and relaxing.

Mindfulness is observing the present moment with kindness and curiosity.

Yoga and mindfulness are two interrelated practices.  A complete yoga practice includes mindfulness. To practice mindfulness is to practice “yoga for the mind,” which exercises and develops our “mind-muscles” to improve focus, awareness, and relaxation. Working with these together increases our ability to be aware of what is going on in our present moment and handle it more efficiently.

Allowing children to be aware of the present moment, outside of electronics, social media, school, stresses, anxieties, and other rigors that come with the various stages of adolescence, allows for greater self-awareness, increased listening skills, improved memory, and increased compassion for self and others

Mindfulness is simple, but not easy. It is a skill that we need to practice

Why Education?

Healthy stress is a natural part of life, including childhood. Children and adults alike need to be challenged in order to grow and develop. However, in the modern education system, healthy stress is frequently displaced by toxic stress. Toxic stress occurs when life’s demands consistently outpace our ability to cope with those demands

Five Foundations Method

Mindfulness Research

Over the last 35 years the neuroscience research on mindfulness practices has shown not only does mindfulness reduce the grey matter of the amygdala, the part of the brain that keeps us in a stressful state of flight/fight/freeze, but it also increases the grey matter of the pre-frontal cortex, which improves executive function, self-compassion, and emotional regulation. All of which are of relevance to academic, psychological and social well-being and the success of youth today.

It all started when…

My personal, mindfulness journey began when I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 11. Although I had family support, education in the 80's was not very compassionate. I struggled with low self-esteem and anxiety . My parents enrolled me in art classes and bought me a diary. My diary became a journal and is an expressive outlet that I still maintain today. When I was 13, my parents took me to my first yoga class at Krupala in Lennox, Ma. I felt so empowered and free. However, in my 20's I got on a crowded subway in NYC and felt like I was going to die. I had just experienced my first panic attack. I enrolled myself in as many yoga classes as possible and found Meditation. I found that consistency was my best friend. I knew that stress was always going to be present, but I could manage it by pressing Pause and taking a deep Breath. In 1998, I moved to Miami Beach and started teaching pre-k. I loved it, but I couldn't help  but notice how anxious the children were. I had my own kids several years later and went back to teaching in Palm Beach County. I couldn't believe the stress I was witnessing not just from the students, but the teachers. When my son was in the 8Th grade he took the PSAT. He told me that during the test he felt like he was going to die. I immediately thought of my subway experience. This moment inspired me to bring Mindfulness & Yoga to education. It was from there, that Mindfulness4kidz was born.

FAQ

How to handle resistance in the classroom?

Participation is a choice with choice also comes the respect to allow others to participate without disturbing them. We set boundaries for each class in part one of the curriculum. We reinforce them as we go along. We tailor the curriculum to be age-appropriate and relevant to their circumstances, to make it more engaging.

What Mindfulness is not?

It is not a disciplinary tool although the side effects may cause classroom management, the intent is to get students engaged and focused on their own well-being and academic achievements.

All of these things will be discussed throughout the program during staff trainings.
